04 · Explore the spine
Twenty-four vertebrae, one family of systems
Turn the hologram with a finger or the mouse, and pick a region to see what it does and what the practice has written about it.
C1–C7 · Neck
Seven small vertebrae carry and turn your head, which weighs about 10 to 12 pounds when it sits balanced over the shoulders.
From the blog
T1–T12 · Mid back
Twelve vertebrae, each joined to a pair of ribs: the frame around the heart and lungs, and the anchor for the shoulder blades.
From the blog
L1–L5 · Low back
The five largest vertebrae carry most of the weight of the upper body and do most of the bending and lifting.

S1–S5 · Sacrum & pelvis
Five vertebrae fused into one: the keystone between the spine and the pelvis, at work with every step, and through every pregnancy.

05 · Load monitor
How heavy is your head?
A head weighs about 10 to 12 pounds when it sits balanced over the shoulders. For every inch it moves forward, that weight effectively multiplies: at a 45-degree angle, a common text-neck position, the neck carries forces equivalent to 50 pounds or more.
Drag the slider (or use the arrow keys) and watch the load climb.
Small fixes from the article
- Bring the phone to eye level instead of looking down.
- Take a break every 20 to 30 minutes: look away, stretch the neck gently side to side, roll the shoulders back.
- Strengthen neck and shoulder muscles with wall angels, reverse shoulder flys and gentle neck stretches.
- At a desk: feet flat, elbows at 90 degrees, screen at eye level.
0° About 10 to 12 pounds Balanced over the shoulders, the way the neck is built to carry it.
